As moms, we’ve all joined the debate at some point: leggings as pants, taboo or not? I know plenty of ladies who would venture to say NO, but personally, I think that’s doing ourselves a serious disfavor. After all, leggings have come a long way aesthetically, so if comfort is our ultimate goal, why the heck wouldn’t we take advantage of this?
Personally, since I’m 31 weeks pregnant, I decided to throw caution to the wind and rock my maternity leggings for a rare night out with my husband. I’m basically carrying a bowling ball around 24/7, so that’s a good excuse, right? 😉 I’ve got to say that the overall result pleased me since I didn’t have to squeeze my butt into uncomfortable clothes and still felt like my belly was supported.
Well, whether you’re into jeggings or good old fashioned black leggings, there’s a style for everyone. And just because Friday night rolls around doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice style for comfort.
That said, here are 3 tips for rocking those leggings on a night out when you want to look and feel your best:
- Not all leggings are created equal. Fact: those $5 Walmart leggings will probably never be appropriate to wear out, unless you’re wearing an extra long tunic. They will also likely not last long being as they’re made from lower quality fabrics which are prone to snagging and tearing. And honestly, which of us hasn’t had that nagging fear in the bag of our heads that our leggings might rip down the middle? Spend the extra cash and get a pair from a reputable retailer with good reviews and quality fabrics.
- The top is everything. Are you pairing your leggings with a regular cotton shirt? Then yeah, you’ll probably end up looking frumpy. Choose tops with extra details like lace ups, bell sleeves, ruffles, etc. Knits are a great choice as well, since the heavier texture on top tends to balance out the bottoms’ form-fitting closeness. If the top is dressy, it translates to the rest of the outfit. And no, crop tops do not belong with leggings 😉
- Accessorize accessorize. We all know accessories can make or break an outfit, but it’s especially true when you’re trying to make leggings look appropriate for date night. So ladies, bust out those heels and wedges and grab your chicest purse. You’ll be amazed how quickly those leggings start looking like they belong!
So, what do you guys think? Would you ever rock leggings as pants?
